SONSEI SETS THE DECKS ON FIRE

Tshepo Tona also known as Sonsei was born on the 23th of September 1996 at Winterveld in Mabopane, he is an international DJ and producer who features a drumist on set, He is passionate about music and he is making his mark in the music industry.

The DJ and producer fell in love with music at the age of 6, he would take cassettes that had various songs and mix them. “I started listening to music at a very young age, I remember when I was 8 I had a radio that recorded songs, I would take cassettes that had a lot of songs with different genres, mix them to make one song and then I realised that it was a God given talent that I could not waste as I grew up” he said.

In 2016 the 23 year old lost everything that he owned, he became homeless and lived on the streets for 3 months; he would sleep hungry and survive street fights daily.it was the toughest time of his life, he survived the cold nights ,conquered challenges and vowed to make his dream come true.

He went from playing at weddings and birthday parties to biggest clubs in South Africa; he has shared stages with artists like black coffee, black motion, Ralf gum, Oskido, euphonic, DJ fresh, major league DJz and cassper Nyovest. “My music career was inspired by Black coffee; he is a hard worker and a game changer who is not afraid to take risks, I love the fact that he took afro house international and he is paving a way for upcoming DJs who want to be known internationally. I remember when he played one of my songs on his set, I could not believe it, my heart was filled with excitement and from that day I fell in love with his work more” Sonsei said. 


Sonsei is featured on one of the biggest songs in the world Jerusalem by Master KG & Nomcebo; he is on the music video of the popular song which has million views on YouTube. He recently released two smash hits titled Ramaphosa and Zulu spear, one of the songs (Ramaphosa) has a music video out already and he is planning on shooting the second music video of Zulu spear in Kenya with IDD Aziz the vocalist who is born and bred in Nairobi.

In a question asked about his favourite song in all the songs he has written thus far, he said is the one titled the sad stories. In the song he talks about the challenges he faced when he started his musical career, the incidents that took place in the dark streets and the first steps he took towards making his dream come true. He added that all 12 songs in his album (sad stories) represents who he is and highlights his musical journey.

In five years’ time he sees himself as one of the well-known and wealthiest DJ in the world, he wants be in the top 50 list of wealthy DJs and have his own academy where he teaches kids from disadvantaged families music and deejaying. The advice he has for upcoming artists is to never give up on their dreams no matter what they go through and to always remember why the want to become DJs or musicians. “Music has no boundaries; it does not matter where you record your songs or music videos, because good music never goes unseen and uniqueness sets you apart from the rest” he concluded.
