FOODIE MOM THRIVES IN BAKING BUSINESS
Naledi Dhlomo born (February 21, 1991) and raised in
Ga-Rankuwa is a mother of two daughters, a baker, junior chef and military
veteran. She started baking in 2019 as a hobby and then she realised that she
needed more training, she registered for a 4 months course at the community
centre in Ga-Rankuwa.
Growing up she wanted to be in the SADF and in 2010 she
joined the south African navy “ those were the best days of my life, serving
and defending my country in uniform and also furthering my love for cooking as
a chef in the navy” said Naledi. Things took a sudden turn when she fell ill in
2015, she could not move from the bed, could not talk, she also struggled to
eat and she ended losing the job that was close to her heart.
“It was darkest time of my life and I lost the best thing
that’s always been a dream for me, which was close to my heart at that time and it
was something I have always wanted to be from a young age. When I was bedridden
I thought I was going to die, there were days when I struggled in communicating
with my family, and I literally had to write down on a piece of paper when I
wanted something. The hardest thing was communicating with my child because she
could not understand what was happening and I did not like her seeing me in
that state” Naledi said.
Her mother took her to the hospital; she recovered after
few months and decided to further her baking skills. In April 2020 she
registered her business (sweet Retreat) and bought a piece of land where she
will build on. For now she is operating from home and raising capital to buy
the equipment she needs for a bakery. She always exceeds the expectations of
her customers and sweet retreat is gaining momentum.
During this lockdown she bakes from home and delivers
door to door ,customers are pleased with her work and more orders are flocking
in. last week she was practicing how to make shapes and patterns using
fondants ,decorated one of her customers cake using those designs and the
customer was pleased with her work.
The advice she got when she started her business was that
God should be a foundation of everything she does and with faith she will
unlock a lot of opportunities. For young individuals who would like to own
businesses, she advises them to be brave enough to take the first step towards
making their dreams a reality and stop procrastinating.
“The only thing standing between you and your dreams is
the doubt within you, like the wise say dreams are delayed by procrastination
and wasting time on things that are not beneficial” said Naledi.
Few years from now
Naledi would like to own a bakery, venture into franchise, mentor young girls
who would like to have their own businesses and inspire black young woman to
believe in their dreams. For more information on sweet retreat and Naledi, you
