SIR TONIC IS MAKING MOVES
Written by Valencia Legodi
Tshepo Joseph Monyaki also known as DJ sir Tonic is a DJ
and a hustler that is based in Olievenhoutbosch; he was born on the 11th
of November 1990 at Bloemfontein and moved to Gauteng in 2001.in 2011 he was
accepted at Tshwane College of commerce and computer studies to study
information technology, but he did not complete his qualification due to
financial struggles
Before he started deejaying he would go to nearby taverns
to watch local djs play, the likes of Sir Collin, mystic G, the late magnetic k
(khutso) inspired him to learn how the machine they played with worked. “Sir Collin
might not know this but I look up to him, hence I address myself as sir. He is
one DJ that promotes local upcoming DJs from different townships” Tshepo said.
In 2011 he was offered a job at Walter’s place to be a
bar man, the place was not really entertaining and he decided to bring his personal
computer, instal owner led virtual DJ on it and played music as he assisted customers.
People started coming to the place often and he would play them music that got
them dancing, at times his personal computer would crash and overheat, A friend
of his would borrow him his pc to keep the music playing.
“The owner soon realised that I was struggling
With
my personal computer and decided to buy proper
Equipment,
then in my free time I would
Connect
the whole sound equipment
And
teach myself how to DJ” Tshepo said
The challenges he faced when he started as a DJ was finding out trends
to follow, target audience and variety of music. Another would be securing gigs
that pay good money and being exploited by pub owners. They would say “take
this as a marketing platform for you to build your brand” and then pay them
with drinks.
When asked how he balances
between being a father and DJ, he said that back then it was a struggle to balance,
because deejaying required him to be hands on and now he only deejays on
weekends and during the week he works from 9-5 and he gets to spend time with
his family.
What keeps him going is his mentor
and uncle Monyaki who always reminds him how good he is with deejaying and how
far he is going. Besides being a club DJ he owns a sound hire company called
Mo-Tonic entertainment and works as a field promoter at Hollywood bets.
The advice he has to for the
upcoming DJs is that they should not allow club owners to exploit them; they
should build their brands, know their value, stick to their principles and believe
in themselves. For more information on DJ Sir Tonic you can follow him on
