ROCK VINTAGE AND CHANGE THE WORLD
Written by Valencia Legodi
John Lati Semenya is best known as Mr Vintage by many
people in Olievenhoutbosch; he sells beautiful collection of vintage clothes
and does a lot of community service. Semenya was born on the 3rd of
October 1990 in Limpopo (Seshego) and raised in Olievenhoutbosch, he is part of
various projects that aim to develop, mentor and educate young people about
culture, careers and self-development.
In 2010 he enrolled at UNISA and studied marketing, he is
currently studying mentorship in psychology at UNISA and he aspires to be a
psychologist, mentor or teacher. He is the co-owner of the brand Vintage Klozet
which was established in 2019 with his friend Morongwa Maifo, he has been
running things while his business partner is overseas.
Vintage Klozet is a brand that has different individuals
under it, they believe in restyling vintage clothes and aim to change people’s
perspective of vintage as a whole. They have decided to branch out and launch
different brands, because of document complications and they also felt like the
time was right for them to be independent. “Everyone now has their own vintage
shops, but vintage klozet still exists and there is someone running it. I am
now selling my own vintage clothes under the brand name Mr Vintage” he said.
The 30 year old
was inspired by his parents’s lifestyle back in the days, the type of clothing
they wore, the way they decorated their walls back home and type of music they
danced to. “When i was young I would wear my father’s clothes, add sunglasses
to the outfit, take a lot of pictures and dance to the classic music they
always played. Growing up People would see me in my vintage outfits and they
would admire the uniqueness of the clothes, sometimes they would ask why I
dress up like that. I love the fact that vintage clothes are a limited edition
of clothes, for instance if a customer purchases a jersey, he or she will not
see someone else wearing the same jersey” John said.
The challenges he has faced since he started selling
vintage clothes, Is that people do not understand that vintage clothes are limited
edition of clothes, which means if someone purchases something from Mr Vintage,
another customer will not be able to get the same item. Another challenge would
be paying transport to deliver clothes to distant customers and sharing clothes
amongst each other because they did not have a place where they could sell
their clothes.
He sells clothes on Facebook and WhatsApp, customers call
him and he delivers clothes door to door. He would like to have a store around
Olievenhoutbosch where people can see his unique items, fit them and buy. The
advice he has for upcoming entrepreneurs is that everyone is born talented,
different and gifted. There is no purpose in doing things the way others do it,
they should embrace their uniqueness and use their gifts to change people’s
lives for the good.
